The gap between Obsidian and AI
Obsidian stores everything as local Markdown files, which is great for ownership and portability. But when you want to use that knowledge with ChatGPT or Claude, you face a manual process: open the note, copy it, paste it into the chat, go back for the next note, repeat. For a project with 10 or 20 relevant notes, this process takes minutes and you inevitably miss something.
Some Obsidian plugins offer AI integrations, but they typically connect to a single AI provider. If you use Claude today and ChatGPT tomorrow, you need different plugins for each. And most plugins require API keys, which means your notes leave your computer through an API call you may not fully control.
How Riflet works with Obsidian: Your vault is a folder of Markdown files on your computer. Open that folder in Riflet, select the notes and subfolders you want, and export them as a single bundle. Step-by-step workflow
Open your vault folder in Riflet
Navigate to your Obsidian vault directory. Riflet shows the full file tree, including nested folders, so you can browse your vault structure the same way you would in Obsidian's file explorer.
Select the notes your AI needs
Pick specific notes, entire folders, or MOCs. For a writing project, select your character notes, plot outline, and recent drafts. For a research project, pick your literature notes and synthesis docs. Leave out daily journals and templates that would just add noise.
Preview and export the bundle
Check the token count, preview the output, and export. Riflet produces a single Markdown file with clear section headers separating each source note. Your Obsidian formatting is preserved.
